Whole Food Multivitamins
After reviewing 38 years of scientific evidence, Dr Robert Fletcher and Dr Kathleen Fairfield, two leading Harvard University professorial researchers, convinced The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) to rewrite its conservative guidelines on the use of vitamin supplements. In their June 2002 article, they stated:
Insufficient vitamin and mineral intake is apparently the cause of chronic diseases. Recent evidence has shown that suboptimal levels of vitamins, even well above the levels causing deficiency syndromes, are risk factors for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and osteoporosis. A large proportion of the general population is apparently at increased risk for this reason.
Fletcher & Fairfield, 2002
It is surprising how many people do not even meet the basic requirements of nutrients. According to data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 93% of adults do not meet the Estimated Average Requirements (EAR) for vitamin E, while 56% do not meet the EAR for magnesium, 44% for vitamin A, 31% for vitamin C, 14% for vitamin B6, 12% for zinc, and more than half for calcium (Moshfegh, 2005).
Of course, dietary improvement is a key goal of the integrative practitioner. However, most practitioners, both medical and complementary, believe optimal levels of micro-nutrients can only be achieved reliably with supplementation. Thus, integrative and complementary practitioners often prescribe a multivitamin, omega-3, and a calcium/magnesium supplement as part of their fundamental recommendations.
Multivitamins with minerals supplements are generally prescribed to:
✔ Overcome common deficiencies
✔ Prevent chronic disease induced by long term sub-optimal nutrient levels
✔ Maintain optimum metabolic pathway functions
✔ Increase stress tolerance and performance
✔ Increase antioxidant protection against ageing and disease
✔ Support immune defense functions
✔ Promote optimal mental performance and emotional balance
✔ Promote vitality and physical performance
✔ Promote a long, healthy lifespan and successful ageing
We recommend 100% Whole Food supplements from Innate Response. Why?
Supplements made from 100% Whole Food have superior bioavailability.
Supplements from 100% Whole Food also have vital cofactors concentrated from foods, so they are safer and more effective. For example, vitamin C is more active when provided with flavonoid cofactors, which are abundant in products made from oranges and high-phenolic food concentrates. Vitamin E is more effective when it is in a mixture of tocopherols (d-alpha, d-beta, d-gamma, d-delta) and tocotrienols from rice bran concentrate. Similarly, the group called carotenoids is far more complex in food than merely as beta-carotene.
Note that synthetically-produced vitamins may actually harm health; for example, synthetic beta-carotene has been shown to harm smokers in cancer studies (Gropper, 2009). In contrast, many studies have shown that the natural mixed carotenoids complex derived from carrots is protective (as alpha- and beta-carotene, with cryptoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, and lycopene). Note too that Innate Response products have no synthetic vitamin A palmitate, which may interfere with vitamin D metabolism.
Innate Response’s B-complex vitamins are food extracts. They are extracted from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a probiotic yeast. The yeast is fully predigested by enzymes in the manufacturing process, removing all traces of the yeast cell wall.* Compared to synthetically-produced B vitamins from other manufacturers, these extracted B vitamins are in the activated coenzyme form, which are more bioactive. Patients digest and assimilate these vitamins with fewer problems.
Similarly, the minerals derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae are still bound to the complex intracellular food matrix rather than being inorganic, and are therefore easier to absorb. Studies show that vitamin and mineral absorption is 135% to 260% better for these yeast-extracted nutrients over the inorganic, synthetic, and isolated forms (Vinson et al., 1989).
Finally, Innate Response is a practitioner-only product that we find to be clinically effective.
*An important note on allergies: These products create no reactivity in yeast-allergic individuals because the yeast cell walls are 100% predigested during manufacture of the yeast extract (allergic antibody reactivity to yeast occurs on the yeast cell walls). All our professional product ranges are gluten, wheat, dairy, corn, egg, peanut, and soy free. This includes Innate Response, Vital Nutrients, and BioCeuticals, as well as Omega Nutrition.
