Boswellia serrata extract (BSE) supports normal cartilage and joint function (Gerhardt et al., 2001). Boswellic acid blocks the pro-inflammatory enzyme 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) that contributes to the chronic inflammation of autoimmune diseases. (Bishnoi M, et al., 2005)

In a double-blind study, the safety and efficacy of a Boswellia extract was compared to the anti-inflammatory drug mesalazine for 102 patients with active Crohn's disease. This study measured the change in the Crohn's Disease Activity Index (CDAI). The group treated with Boswellia extract (at 3.6 g per day) had their average CDAI reduced by 90, compared to a reduction of 53 for the mesalazine group (4.5 g per day). The authors concluded, "Considering both safety and efficacy of BSE, it appears to be superior over mesalazine in terms of a benefit-risk evaluation" (Bone, 2004).

Similar benefits have been shown with colitis (Gupta et al., 1997), and for asthma patients, who reduced the frequency and severity of their attacks while on Boswellia (Gupta et al., 1998).

In a double-blind cross-over study of the effects of BSE on osteoarthritis of the knee, its researchers concluded, "All patients receiving drug treatment reported decrease in knee pain, increased knee flexion and increased walking distance. The frequency of swelling in the knee joint was decreased .... [This is] clinically relevant. BSE is recommended in the patients of osteoarthritis of the knee with possible therapeutic use in other arthritis" (Kimmatkar et al., 2003).

Recommended Dosage:
