CoEnzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an important antioxidant nutrient for the mitochondria. CoQ10 helps to increase energy at cellular levels, especially in performance athletes, in whom levels get depleted; and in the elderly, as the aged produce less on their own.

It is commonly used to support the ageing cardiovascular system and to promote additional tolerance for exercise. It helps maintain and support healthy functioning of the heart muscle, arteries, and immune system (Gropper, 2009).

Plasma levels of CoQ10 are an independent predictor of survival in a cohort of patients with chronic heart failure. A meta-analysis showed that CoQ10 supplementation resulted in an improvement in the ejection fraction of 3.7% (95%CI 1.59-5.77) and the mean increase in cardiac output was 0.28 L/minute (95%CI 0.03-0.53). There is also a reduction of blood pressure with higher doses (Molyneux et al., 2009).
