Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is the most abundant hormone circulating through our bodies. Produced by the adrenal glands, DHEA can be used to make several other hormones, particularly estrogen and testosterone. Under stress, however, more DHEA is converted to progesterone and cortisol, provided the adrenals are producing optimal levels. DHEA may be considered a "buffer hormone," since it is only used by the body for sex hormones or cortisol when needed. DHEA, along with other adrenal hormones, affects metabolism, immune response, and energy levels.

Many of its beneficial results are due to the way it inhibits the damaging effects of stress, especially on the immune system. DHEA also plays other important roles: It increases cellular sensitivity to insulin, increases fat metabolism, and may reduce muscle wasting associated with ageing (Murray, 1998). Low DHEA levels are found in many people with chronic diseases and those over 50, particularly if they are chronically anxious or stressed, over-exercise, experience chronic pain, or smoke.

It is recommended that blood levels be monitored if giving or taking the supplement and to provide doses sufficient only to maintain optimal physiological levels.
